This enlistment poster picturing a soldier on horseback rallying potential recruits is one of many striking posters designed by Czech artist Vojtěch Preissig during World War I. Issued by the Czechoslovak Recruiting Office in New York City, the image also appeared on postcards and intended to prompt immigrants to join the military. Born in Bohemia, Preissig returned to his native land in the 1930s, after living in New York and Boston for twenty years. During World War II, he joined the resistance during Nazi occupation. Preissig was executed at the Dachau concentration camp in 1944.
