To Slay the Serpent
Editorial cartoonist William Allen Rogers became a well-regarded contributor to the New York Herald during World War I. On the eve of the United States joining the war effort, Rogers chose Minerva, the goddess of both war and knowledge, to slay the serpent crushing Europe, which bears the head of Kaiser Wilhelm II. Pro-war, Rogers tacked "US" on to Minerva's shield, three months before the United States formally entered the war. |
