Profiting from the War
Minnesotan Frank Naughton presents two arguments revealing American interests in seeing the European war continue in his three-panel editorial cartoon, which he drew for the Duluth News Tribune weeks after the war's start. Duluth, where immigrants made up more than a quarter of the population, was one of the largest shipping ports in the United States and stood to profit from wartime production. Naughton ridicules the butcher's customer who is celebrating economic opportunities that the war presents until the customer realizes the butcher is gouging him. Food prices increased significantly and the nation's businesses profited mightily during World War I. |
