Existing comment: William Rehnquist at His Senate Confirmation Hearing

William Rehnquist, appointed by President Richard Nixon, appeared before the Senate Committee on the Judiciary in November 1971. Howard Brodie depicts him with senators Birch Bayh (D-IN) and Edward M. "Ted" Kennedy (D-MA). Succeeding John M. Harlan, he was confirmed by the Senate on December 10, 1971. Ronald Reagan appointed Rehnquist Chief Justice in 1986. Although part of the court's conservative wing, he was successful as a chief justice in building consensus among the justices. He remained on the bench until his death on September 3, 2005.
