President Ford's Videotaped Testimony
On September 5, 1975, Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme took a gun with her to the California State Capitol grounds in Sacramento, where President Gerald Ford moved through the crowd to meet with the governor. Wanting to speak with him about protecting redwoods, she brandished, but did not fire, her gun. Her attorney John Virga went to Washington, D.C., to depose Ford, whose videotaped testimony was played for the jurors on November 15, 1975, as shown in Howard Brodie's drawing: United States v. Frome, 405 F.Supp. 578 (1975). Fromme, who had been a member of Charles Manson's "family," served a long sentence and did not earn her release from prison until 2009.
