George Herriman's Krazy Kat
Although not a popular feature when it was originally published, Krazy Kat quickly received critical acclaim from the American intelligentsia -- and more importantly -- from George Herriman's publisher, William Randolph Hearst. Registered as a mulatto at his birth in New Orleans in 1880, Herriman passed for white during his entire career. The cartoonist played with language and fluidity of identity in the love triangle between the title character, Krazy Kat, the brick-throwing mouse, Ignatz, and the policeman, Officer Pupp. |
