Existing comment: 1980s Mexican American Punk Culture

Independent artist, Jaime Hernandez, with his brothers Mario and Gilbert, self-published Love and Rockets in 1981. Jaime's love of comic book illustration meshed with the Los Angeles punk rock scene in the 1980s as he created two characters grounded in the world he saw around him in Oxnard, California: Maggie and Hopey -- both complicated and strong Latinas. Fantagraphics, then a new imprint, began to publish their stories in 1982, and the brothers have remained in print continuously since.
