Existing comment: Fanzines

Fanzines -- self-published magazines originating in the Science Fiction community -- became an integral part of comic book culture in the 1950s and 1960s, offering an early avenue for industry news and information as well as providing a platform for burgeoning artists to publish their own art inspired by popular characters and stories. Comic fanzine The Comic Reader was published by Jerry Bails, creator of the long running publication Alter Ego. Fanzines and zine culture can be seen as forerunners to today's self-published mini-comics and web comics.
