Twisted Sisters, created by Aline Kominsky and Diane Noomin, along with Wimmen's Comix, were all-female anthologies published in response to the male-dominated Underground Comix scene in the 1970s, in which women cartoonists often felt ignored or invisible. Many Underground Comix, including Twisted Sisters and Wimmen's Comix, address more mature subject matter than their mainstream counterparts and are explicitly anti-censorship. First published in 1976, Twisted Sisters started up again in 1994 and featured such artists as Dame Darcy, Julie Doucet, Phoebe Gloeckner, and Carol Tyler. |
