All of the belligerent Great War countries quickly realized the propaganda value of posters, hitherto used primarily in sales. Posters covered many walls, often using just words, but artists designed others using color lithography, as shown here. French posters were the most artistic; German posters employed forceful designs; many British posters were later viewed as too cluttered for the message.
