Existing comment: A Manual of Cricket and Base Ball

Although the first twenty pages of this booklet cover cricket, the final four pages on baseball give the volume its historical importance. As teams rapidly formed in the United States, many players relied on this manual to master the basic rules. The diagram shown here for the Massachusetts Game, in which "D" is "fourth base" or "home" for scoring purposes, is the first printed illustration of a baseball field geared toward an adult audience.
