On April 4, 1865, two days after the capital of the Confederacy fell, Lincoln visited Richmond. When a group of black laborers fell on their knees upon seeing him, Lincoln said "Don't kneel to me. That is not right. You must kneel to God only, and thank him for the liberty you will hereafter enjoy."
