Beef Depot Monument
Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, February 1, 1862
Cattle, which would provide meat for Union troops, grazed at the foot of the unfinished Washington Monument. Construction had stalled at about 150 feet in 1856 due to lack of private funding and did not resume until 1879. The monument was completed in 1884.
