Lithograph, ca. 1863

During the US Civil War, General George McClellan served for a short time as the commanding general of the Union Army. McClellan, referred to as "Little Mac" by those he commanded, was well liked by the troops, but failed to retain the trust of the Commander-in-Chief, President Abraham Lincoln. While at the Soldiers' Home in the summer of 1862, President Lincoln confided to a longtime friend and Illinois Senator Orville Browning, of his growing frustrations with McClellan's inaction on the battlefield.
