James Herbert earned a Ph.D. in the history of ideas from Brandeis University and, after a career in university teaching, served on the College Board in New York City and as a senior official at the National Endowment for the Humanities. Part memoir and part advice manual, his 2015 book, "To Jonah, When You Are Twenty-five," imparts the wisdom of his working life -- along with lessons in history, philosophy and life itself -- to his grandchildren and their generation in the form of grandfatherly letters. |
