Frederick Law Olmsted's work in landscape design for a variety of public and private places, parks, expositions, and neighborhoods continued through the Olmsted successor firm headed by stepson John Charles Olmsted (1852-1920) and son Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. (1870-1957). The latter served on the McMillan and Fine Arts commissions of Washington, DC, and as a planner for California state parks and the National Park system. The Olmsted legacy continues in the ongoing use and reinterpretations of public parks, serving democratic principles of access to nature, shared outdoor recreational and gathering space, and public health and well-being.
