Existing comment: Designing Public Spaces
Frederick Law Olmsted and the successor landscape architecture firm headed by his sons collaborated with others in creating a myriad of public parks, parkways, recreation areas, scenic reservations, arboreta, campuses, cemeteries, memorials, and grounds of public buildings. They also designed grounds for private estates, residential communities, hospitals, hotels, and resorts. Congress engaged Olmsted in 1873 to redesign the US Capitol grounds. Two generations of Olmsted influence materialized in Washington in various locales -- including Galluadet College, the National Mall, and the National Zoo -- and multi-use green living and working spaces were manifested in cities and suburbs across the country.
