Annie Oakley and Tagg debuted as a television series in 1954, one of the first to feature a female heroine. The show and comic book were based on the historical figure of Annie Oakley, who rose to fame as a sharpshooter in Buffalo Bill's Wild West show. She became an early female celebrity for her daring feats of marksmanship, such as hitting dimes mid-air and snuffing out candles with a single bullet. Buffalo Bill's circus-like extravaganza recreated daring rescues, heroic battles, and Native American dances. The show toured the United States and crossed the globe between 1883 and 1906 and helped to popularize the myth of the American West. |
