Hester Catherine Nelson
Ceramic Artist
Hester Catherine Nelson, 36, an architectural ceramic artist and a District resident, died from head and neck injuries resulting from a car accident Aug. 19. She was pronounced dead at George Washington University Hospital.
According to a police spokesman, she was driving south on Rock Creek Parkway near Beach Drive when she crossed into the northbound lane and collided head-on with a van. She was pronounced dead at George Washington University Hospital, where the two people in the van were treated for injuries.
Ms. Nelson, a native of Washington and graduate of the Field School, received a bachelor's degree in art from the Kansas City Art Institute. She attended the Corcoran School of Art and the Maryland Institute College of Art.
She won a juried competition of the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities in 1994 for a custom ceramic environment at Lamont Street Park in Mount Pleasant. Her two 10-foot ceramic columns, bridged by a carved rosewood trellis, formed a gateway to the park. She also created two columns on display at the King Street Metro Station in Alexandria during the early 1990s. Her other work included outdoor trellises, fireplace mantels, tables, sconces, planters and other custom work for the home.
Since 1985, she had also worked on and off as a salesperson at Reiters Scientific and Professional Books, Washington Law & Professional Books and the Zenith Gallery.
Survivors include her mother, Barbara A. Nelson, her father, Robert E. Nelson, a brother, Bobby Nelson, and two sisters, Beth Nelson and Meg Dawson, all of the District. |
