Howard Charles Liebengood

Howard Charles Liebengood (1969 – January 9, 2021) was an officer of the United States Capitol Police. Prior to entering law enforcement, Liebengood had a career in professional racing.
Early life
In 1969, Liebengood was born in Manhattan, Kansas to Howard Liebengood and his wife Dee. In the 1980s, Liebengood attended James Madison High School of Vienna, Virginia, where he was on the wrestling team.
In May 1991, Liebengood graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor's degree in history.
Racing career
Liebengood spent several years as a professional racecar driver. He placed third in the 1997 Toyota Atlantic Championship (C2-Class). Liebengood and teammate Andy Lally of Northport, N.Y. won the 2000 Motorola Cup Sport Touring class, driving in a 1997 BMW 328. Liebengood was sponsored by Pennzoil and the "National Campaign to Stop Violence", an anti-bullying organization.
Capitol Police
In April 2005, Liebengood joined the Capitol Police; his father had previously served as Sergeant at Arms of the United States Senate. Liebengood was on duty during the 2021 storming of the United States Capitol. On January 9, 2021, Liebengood died while off-duty. The cause of death was reported as suicide. |
