Trained as a mathematician and engineer, Seattle-based Michael Schultheis' artistic process reflects his interest in the visualization of equations. He approached the blank canvas -- as he did an engineer's white board -- with ideas expressed in unsolved mathematical equations. As his painting evolves, he added layers of color and shapes that visually resolve the original equations. Seeking to express a sense of beauty within the structure of equations, Scuhultheis' work embodies the personal and the logical in mathematics.
In 2005, Schultheis' exhibition "Cycloids" was exhibited at the National Academy of Sciences. The series of paintings was inspired by the structure of the NAS building auditorium. In this diptych, the fundamental shapes and forms of the auditorium are found within the layers of paint.
