Rough drawing for cartoon published
in Punch, 24 August 1960

Steadman started sending his cartoons to Punch in 1957. For three years he received a succession of rejection slips from the art editor, Bill Hewison. This rough drawing was returned with the following note: 'I'm passing the "Bureau" in spite of the boxing boots, but I would stress the inadvisability of straining for effect.' Some things were changed -- the chair and the desk became fancier -- but the boxing boots stayed.
