In the 1950s, cartoonists had short punchy named like "Giles," "Low," "JAK," and "Trog." So Steadman decided he should become "STEAD." "It was my mother who wondered if I was ashamed of my full name. I hadn't given it a thought until then. I was merely looking for an identity with a short sharp name that everyone would remember."
His mother's comment made him think again: from autumn 1961 his cartoons were signed "STEADman."
