Existing comment: Time and Space (2020)
Employing whatever was at hand that sparked her imagination, Smigrod created a set of photograms concerned with the destruction and degradation of the original image to create the Time and Space Series. The imprint of the tonally reversed image-derived from either vintage lanternslides or random printed matter-was then further altered or marred by a deliberate "painting in" with residual chemistry. For the photograms derived from lanternslides, Smigrod disrupted the development process to manipulate the image in unexpected ways, resulting in eerie re-drawings of vaguely identifiable locations. Other works in this series-those created from the bleeding together of the recto and verso of printed matter- illustrate her incipient interest in dynamic dialogues between image and text in which the source material is rendered largely illegible.
