The Jewish diaspora in Europe led to many Jews living in segregated communities and suffering from many forms of discrimination. Jews did not enjoy equal civil rights and endured recurring surges of anti-Semitic violence.
In Hebrew, the word "Aliyah" refers to the immigration of diasporic Jews to Israel. It literally means "rising up," and originally referred the Jewish movement into Jerusalem. The Hebrew language does not accommodate "immigration" to Israel-only "rising up."
A majority of Israeli military operations came as a response to Palestinian aggression towards the Israeli civilian population. A majority of Palestinian aggression came as a response to Israeli occupation and siege of Gaza.
