Existing comment: Burko the Explorer
Diane Burko is a Brooklyn-born, Philadelphia-based painter and photographer who has traveled the globe to find her subjects. Known as a landscape painter, she has increasingly been drawn to dramatic manifestations of nature's processes-thunderous waterfalls, erupting volcanoes, melting glaciers.
Burko describes herself as an artist/explorer, and for her the physical and sensory experience is critical. Immersing herself in nature's rhythms in diverse geographic sites, while constantly moving around the globe, she gains a sense of the planet's vitality and its interconnected operations.
For the past fifteen years, Burko has centered her art on climate change, witnessing and documenting the effects of glacial melt and coral reef bleaching in photographs, which may stand alone or serve as the basis for large-scale paintings that carry the theme into an emotionally expressive register.
