Pakistani journalist Zaman Mehsud risked his life to cover the news in the troubled tribal region of South Waziristan, where government troops battled Taliban fighters for control. A correspondent for the newspapers Daily Ummat and Daily Nai Baat, Mehsud, 38, was also president of South Waziristan's Tribal Union of Journalists and a monitor for the Human Rights Commission. "We are the real sources of news and information," said Mehsud. "But if we annoy either side, we may be killed." On Nov. 3, 2015, Mehsud was riding to work on his motorcycle when two men pulled up alongside him and opened fire, killing him. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. He was killed the day after the United Nations observed International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.
