On May 31, 1892, Johnstown unveiled its monument to the unknown men, women and children who died in the great flood. Thousands of people attended, a military band played, and dignitaries spoke. The "last public act of the tragedy of Conemaugh" commemorated 734 unknown dead, a number that would eventually increase to 755.
