Saturday, June 1
Arthur J. Moxham is elected chairman of Johnstown's Citizens' Committee to reestablish order within the city, rescue the living, set up morgues and start clearing away debris.
In Pittsburgh, concerned citizens form a Relief Committee. In one day the committee receives over $48,000; its first train load of supplies leaves for Johnstown at 4:00pm.
General Daniel H. Hastings, Adjutant-General of the State Militia, arrives in Johnstown. As soon as a telegraph line is repaired, he sends for men and supplies.
The first two temporary hospitals are established.
Sunday, June 2:
Volunteers and relief supplies reach Johnstown from the west via the Pennsylvania Railroad.
Medical supplies and doctors arrive from Pittsburgh. Within the week, 98 doctors come to Johnstown as volunteers.
The Pennsylvania State Board of Health reports to Moxham and Hastings to assist with medical care and sanitation in flood area.
Seven railroad cars laden with coffins arrive from Allegheny. |
