In 1920, Federal recognition came to the Battalion as part of the Louisiana National Guard. Expanded in 1930 and redesignated as the 141st Field Artillery, the unit went into Federal service in early 1941. In 1943 the regiment broke up and reorganization brought new designations as the Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 141st Field Artillery Group and the 934th and 935th Field Artillery Battalions. Serving in the European, African, Middle Eastern theater of the war (EAME), both battalions were awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for action in the "Colmar Pocket." Following additional redesignation during World War II, the units were returned to the Louisiana National Guard in 1945. After reorganization in 1967, the 1st Battalion was created as an element of the 256th Infantry Brigade.
