Fifteen years and an additional $400,000 after passage of the monument bill, thirteen years after the laying of the cornerstone, the Indiana Soldiers & Soldiers Monument was dedicated on May 15, 1902. Thousands of Hoosier veterans, marching under the scarred and faded banners they had carried into battle and triumphantly deposited at the state capitol in 1865, attended the ceremonies, and stood proudly under the inscription carved in the native stone:
