In Santiago de Caballeros, Carnival celebrations begin with a mask making competition. Local artisans attempt to impress a panel of judges with their most colorful and impressive creations, while preserving a unique part of regional Dominican culture.
This Pepin style mask with a broad face and long horns is believed to have originated from long standing rivalries between neighborhoods.
This desire to make neighborhoods stand out has in turn propelled local artisans to come up with unique designs to represent the different groups from all over town. |
