The Saturn I, the Saturn 1B and the Saturn V were all members of the Saturn family of rockets developed in Huntsville. The Saturn 1B, as displayed here in full scale, had more power than the earlier Saturn I -- enough for orbital training missions with both the Apollo spacecraft and lunar module. But it was the 363-foot Saturn V rocket that ultimately took American astronauts out of Earth's orbit and on to the moon. One of only three remaining original Saturn V rockets, along with a full-scale vertical replica, can be seen at the US Space and Rocket Center only a few miles south in Huntsville. The Saturn V is listed as a National Historic Landmark and represents one of the greatest scientific achievements in human history. With a 100 percent success rate, it was responsible for putting 12 American astronauts on the surface of the moon.
