Existing comment: This is the grave of John Tyler. He was famous for the campaign slogan "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too" when he ran as William Henry Harrison's vice president. Harrison died of pneumonia that he contracted while delivering his long inaugural address in the rain and Tyler became president. Harrison was the first president to die in office and Tyler established the transition precedent. In 1861, he participated in a peace conference that tried to avert the Civil War but came back saying that Virginia should secede. He died in 1862. In 1915, the federal government forgave him for his actions before the war, putting up this, the first monument erected by the US government to anyone who had joined the Confederacy.
