In 1953, Ukrainian-Americans gathered in New York City to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Holodomor. Raphael Lemkin, who coined the term "genocide" in 1944 to describe the Holocaust, was invited to speak. Lemkin asserted that the manmade famine was not only "mass murder," but a "case of genocide, of destruction, not of individuals only, but of a culture and a nation."
