Existing comment: A de-kulakized family forced out of their home in Udachne, Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine, 1930s.
Soviet propaganda demonized kulaks, relatively prosperous land-owning farmers. Mandated collectivization forced them to leave their land to work as day laborers. With government mismanagement of newly collectivized farms, production declined and rations for urban workers were cut, spreading famine from the countryside to cities.
