The 1921 Treaty of Riga placed much of Ukraine within the newly established western borders of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). The Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic joined other diverse republics united under a Soviet regime ideologically committed to erasing national differences. Ukraine, with its fertile black soil, became the Soviet breadbasket.
