Illustrated stories of underdogs and well-meaning villains were incredibly popular in the Edo period. Chushingura, the famous story of teh forty-seven ronin (masterless samurai), was blockbuster material. Rendered as plays for kabuki and puppet theaters, Chushingura was a constant presence in early modern popular culture. The vivid coloration in Hokusai's illustrated version of the story by Sakuragawa Jininari (1762-1833) contrasts with the unfinished state of Ehoh Suikoden.
