In many ways, this book represents the print version of Hokusai's unfinished handscroll of the same subject, also in this gallery. Notice how the rugged figures and tense atmosphere echo the painting. Hokusai was a sought-after illustrator; publishers vied for his contributions, since his pictures along often turned printed publications into bestsellers. As a result, Hokusai was called upon to produce a significant number of illustrations for literary works. |
