Existing comment: Herzfeld, Krefter, and Bulbul the Boar
Herzfeld and his drafting assistant Friedrich Krefter, pictured at left, had met only briefly before the 1928 Pasargadae excavations. Nevertheless, the two made an effective team and went on to work together on the much more extensive 1933 excavations in nearby Persepolis.
Some described Herzfeld as exacting and reserved. He seems to have enjoyed animals, however. As the right-hand photograph shows, he found time for his pet boar, Bulbul, Persian for "nightingale."
