Existing comment: John Copeland and Lewis Leary held the US Rifle Works on Halls Island for 16 hours before attempting escape. "The whole fire of at least fifty men was then turned upon poor Leary and myself," John Copeland later wrote. "(Leary) was shot through the body but did not die until ten hours afterwards." Copeland was captured and barely escaped lynching by an angry mob.
