"Hiring out" or renting slaves, both on a short term and a yearly basis, was a common practice. Many southerners who could not afford to own a slave rented slaves for brief periods. Even the United States government, as this document indicates, rented slaves from their masters to work in the Armory at Harpers Ferry. |
