Slaves employed a variety of strategies to oppose their demeaning status. Common forms of resistance included sabotage, arson, stealing, running away, murder, suicide, organized insurrection, work slow downs, accommodation, feigned ignorance, religious commitments, and extended family networks.
All resistance entailed risk. When overtly defiant, slaves endangered their personal and family security. By working within the system, slaves risked perpetuating the very conditions which oppressed them. |
