Existing comment: Young Woman

In a letter published in Cincinnati's Daily Dispatch newspaper in October 1856, a recent visitor to New York City wrote glowingly of the many amenities enjoyed by patrons of "Gurney's Palace of Art." These included "the ladies' boudoir, an elegantly furnished room for ladies." The best photographers often provided special accommodations for women, such as dressing rooms where they could freshen their appearance or change into finer clothing in preparation for their portrait sitting. The beautifully attired young woman portrayed in this daguerreotype clearly made every effort to ensure she looked her best before posing for the camera.
