Existing comment: The Great Peace Jubilee, July 1 to 4, 1913:
The first grand reunion of Union and Confederate veterans was held at Gettysburg to herald the 50th anniversary of the Battle. 55,400 veterans and over 100,000 visitors attended this world-wide event, characterized by the London Times as "the mingling of the Blue and the Gray [which] has eradicated forever the scars of the Civil War." The nation's African-American leaders disagreed, noting that racial equality for Blacks, the real purpose of the Civil War, had yet to be achieved. Right: Union and Confederate veterans greet each other in friendship.
