Camp Letterman, September 1863:
By August 1, the 5,000 remaining wounded soldiers were removed from the many hospital sites in and around Gettysburg to a consolidated facility. Camp Letterman was located a mile east of Gettysburg on the York Pike, now Route 30. The town buildings used as hospitals then returned to their normal purposes. Camp Letterman was closed on December 1, 1863. |
