John Burns did not take in his cellar to avoid the danger of flying missiles. On July 1, when the battle opened, he took to the field to fight alongside Union troops. He was wounded three times and his actions earned him national fame. Here he is seen convalescing in front of his house at the southeast corner of Chambersburg Street and West Street. Burns' home was replaced with the double house now on the site.
