Artist Don Troiani captures the ordeal of many citizens who sat in their cellars while bullets and artillery flew overhead, occasionally striking their houses. The Moses McLean family's experiences were similar to the artist's scene: "... there was a loud crash and a shell came tearing through a 15 inch brick wall... the dust was so thick that at first it was mistaken for smoke, but the shell did not explode."
