Existing comment: Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor
Roads West
Historically, the Allegheny Mountains limited travelers to a few westward routes across Pennsylvania. Native American trails, as well as military and toll roads constructed across the mountains, were later incorporated as part of the Lincoln Highway. Consequently, many communities along the highway (like Fort Loudoun) have served generations of travelers.
The original Fort was built in 1756 to protect local settlers from the continuing threat of Indian raids on the Pennsylvania frontier. The Fort played an important role as a fortified supply depot and a communications link along the Forbes Road.
In 1765 James Smith, a local man, led a group of settlers to stop the shipment of Indian trade goods containing weapons and ammunition. Concerned about the safety of local citizens, Smith and his men attacked the Fort. Several confrontations occurred which forced the eventual British withdrawal from the Fort.
