Existing comment: Restoration of the Site:
In 1982, Mr. And Mrs. Sam Boaz deeded the property which includes the Ft. Defiance site to the City of Clarksville. Two years later, three
professors at Austin Peay State University and other concerned citizens began the restoration. The History and Geology Departments worked as a team to complete a topographic survey of the site, with dimensions of the fort and located of such areas as the magazine determined.
Using City equipment, the team was able to clear the interior of the fort, revealing two major gun platforms for river defense, two smaller platforms for inland defense, two covered ways, and the magazine. The City of Clarksville brought in heavy equipment and prepared the soil for grass seed and began the outer entrenchment restoration. Within months, the grass has taken hold, a parking facility had been added and the site was placed on a regular mowing schedule. Today the site is being restored by the Clarksville Montgomery County Historical Museum, the Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department, and the Clarksville Street Department.
